How Each Percentage Formula Works
This calculator covers the eight most common percentage problems people run into โ from finding a percent of a number, to figuring out what percent one value is of another, to calculating growth, discounts and differences. Pick an operation above and the calculator applies the matching formula below.
Percentage Calculator FAQs
What's the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?
Percentage change measures directional movement from an original value to a new value, so it can be positive (increase) or negative (decrease), and it's calculated relative to the original value. Percentage difference is a symmetric comparison between two values with no 'before' or 'after', calculated relative to their average, and is always positive.
Why doesn't a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease return the original value?
Because each percentage is calculated on a different base. Increasing 100 by 50% gives 150, but decreasing 150 by 50% gives 75, not 100 โ the base value changed between the two calculations.
How do I calculate a discounted price?
Use the Discount Calculator tab: enter the original price and discount percentage, and it applies the 'subtract X% from Y' formula to show the discount amount and final price directly.
What is the formula for percentage increase or decrease?
Percentage increase is ((new value โ original value) รท original value) ร 100. Percentage decrease uses the same formula with the values reversed: ((original value โ new value) รท original value) ร 100.
Can this calculator handle negative numbers?
Yes, most operations accept negative values, though percentage change and percentage of a number are the most reliable for negative inputs since they use absolute value in the denominator where needed to avoid sign confusion.
