How Marks to CGPA Conversion Works

This calculator converts raw exam marks (obtained out of a maximum) into an equivalent CGPA. It works in the opposite direction of the CGPA to Percentage Calculator, which starts from a known CGPA and produces a percentage - use this tool when you have marks and want CGPA, and the other when you already have CGPA and want percentage.

Calculation Steps

Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained ÷ Maximum Marks) × 100
Direct method: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5 (the standard formula used when no university-specific method applies).
University-specific method: e.g. VTU uses CGPA = Percentage ÷ 10, and Anna University uses CGPA = (Percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75.
The resulting CGPA is capped at 10.0 and mapped to a letter grade (O, A+, A, B+, B, C, P or F).

How do I convert my exam marks into CGPA?

First, your percentage is calculated as (marks obtained ÷ maximum marks) × 100. Then either the standard formula (percentage ÷ 9.5) or a university-specific formula is applied to get your CGPA.

What is the difference between the direct and university-specific method?

The direct method always uses percentage ÷ 9.5, which works as a general estimate. The university-specific method applies the exact formula your institution uses, such as VTU's percentage ÷ 10 or Anna University's (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75, giving a more accurate result.

Why is CGPA capped at 10.0?

Indian university CGPA scales run from 0 to 10, so even if a formula would mathematically produce a higher value for very high marks, the result is capped at 10.0 to stay within the valid scale.
