How GST Is Calculated

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a single indirect tax applied to the supply of most goods and services in India. This calculator uses the GST 2.0 rate structure effective from 22nd September 2025, which simplified the earlier six-slab system into four main rates, and splits the tax into CGST + SGST or IGST depending on whether the transaction is within a state or across states.

GST Rate Slabs & Formula

Rates: 0% (nil, essentials), 0.25% (cut & polished gems), 3% (gold, silver, diamonds), 5% (merit rate — daily essentials, healthcare, education), 18% (standard rate — most goods & services), and 40% (demerit rate — luxury & sin goods).

Exclusive pricing: GST Amount = Amount × Rate ÷ 100, Final Amount = Amount + GST. Inclusive pricing: Taxable Value = Amount × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate), GST = Amount − Taxable Value. Intra-state supplies split the GST equally into CGST and SGST; inter-state supplies charge the full amount as IGST.

GST rates and slab classifications are notified by the GST Council and can change between Budgets or council meetings. Always confirm the current rate for your specific goods or services on the official GST portal or with a tax professional before invoicing or filing.

GST Calculator FAQs

What are the current GST rate slabs under GST 2.0?

Effective 22nd September 2025, GST 2.0 uses four main slabs — 0% (nil rate for essentials), 5% (merit rate for daily essentials and priority sectors), 18% (standard rate for most goods and services), and 40% (demerit rate for luxury and sin goods) — plus special rates of 0.25% and 3% for precious stones and gold/silver.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For intra-state (within the same state) transactions, GST is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST), each half the total rate. For inter-state transactions, the full GST amount is charged as IGST (Integrated GST) instead.

What is the difference between GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive pricing?

In exclusive pricing, GST is added on top of the entered amount (Final Amount = Amount + GST). In inclusive pricing, the entered amount already contains GST, so the calculator backs out the taxable value using Taxable Value = Amount × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate).

What is the GST Composition Scheme?

The Composition Scheme lets small businesses below a turnover threshold pay GST at a flat rate on turnover instead of the regular rate structure — 1% for manufacturers and traders, and 5% for restaurants — with simplified quarterly compliance but no input tax credit.

How do I know which GST rate applies to my product or service?

This calculator can suggest a rate category based on common item keywords, but GST classification depends on the HSN/SAC code of your specific product or service. Always verify the applicable rate on the official GST portal or with a tax consultant before invoicing.
