How Irrigation Water Requirement Is Calculated
This calculator estimates how much water your crop needs for the whole growing season, in cubic metres and litres, and how efficiently that water is used depending on the irrigation method - useful for planning pump run-time, electricity or diesel budgets, and deciding whether upgrading to drip or sprinkler irrigation is worth the investment.
Base Water Requirement
Each crop has a standard water requirement in millimetres over the season (e.g. wheat 450 mm, rice 1,200 mm, sugarcane 2,000 mm), based on its evapotranspiration needs across the crop cycle.
Season, Climate & Soil Adjustments
That base figure is multiplied by a season factor (Kharif 0.7×, Rabi 1.0×, Zaid 1.3×), a climate factor (hot-dry 1.3×, moderate 1.0×, humid 0.85×), and a soil factor (sandy 1.25×, loamy 1.0×, clayey 0.9×) to reflect rainfall, evaporation and water retention differences.
Converting to Volume & Efficiency
Total Water (m³) = Water depth (mm) × 10 × Area (hectares), then divided by irrigation efficiency
Since 1 mm of water over 1 hectare equals 10 cubic metres, this gives the raw water requirement. It is then divided by the method's efficiency - flood 60%, sprinkler 75%, drip 90% - since less efficient methods lose more water to runoff and evaporation.

How much water does my crop need for the whole season?
Total seasonal water need depends on the crop's base requirement in millimetres, adjusted for season, climate and soil type, then converted to cubic metres and divided by your irrigation method's efficiency - the calculator shows this as both total m³ and total litres.
Which irrigation method uses water most efficiently?
Drip irrigation is most efficient at around 90%, followed by sprinkler systems at 75% and flood irrigation at only 60%, meaning flood irrigation needs roughly 50% more total water pumped to deliver the same amount of water to the crop.
Why does the same crop need different amounts of water in different seasons?
The Kharif (monsoon) season gets natural rainfall so irrigation needs drop to about 70% of standard, while Zaid (summer) has higher evaporation and needs about 130% of standard, and Rabi (winter) sits at the standard 100% baseline.
How is the number of irrigations for a crop determined?
It's based on typical practice per crop - for example wheat is irrigated around 5 times per season while paddy rice needs near-continuous flooding (around 30 irrigations) - and the total water requirement is divided evenly across that many irrigations.
How can I reduce my irrigation water usage?
Switching from flood to drip or sprinkler irrigation, mulching to cut evaporation, irrigating in early morning or evening, and using soil moisture sensors before each irrigation can together cut water use by 30-50% without hurting yield.
