How EPF Maturity Is Calculated

The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme in which both you and your employer contribute a percentage of your basic salary every month. These contributions accumulate with compound interest declared annually by the EPFO, building a retirement corpus that you can withdraw when you leave employment or retire.

EPF Calculation Method

Each year: Employee Contribution = Basic Salary × Employee Rate% × 12, and Employer Contribution = Basic Salary × Employer Rate% × 12. Interest for the year is calculated as (Opening Balance + Total Contribution) × Interest Rate%, and this interest is added to get the closing balance, which becomes next year's opening balance.

Default employee contribution is 12% of basic salary; employer contribution is typically 3.67% (the remainder of the employer's 12% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme).

Because interest compounds annually on both contributions and the growing balance, the corpus grows faster in later years — staying invested for longer periods significantly increases the final maturity amount.

EPF Calculator FAQs

How is EPF interest calculated?

EPF interest is calculated annually on the opening balance plus that year's total employee and employer contributions, using the interest rate declared by EPFO for the year (currently around 8.15%). The interest is credited to the account and compounds for subsequent years.

What is the standard EPF contribution rate?

Employees typically contribute 12% of their basic salary plus dearness allowance to EPF. The employer also contributes 12%, but only 3.67% goes into the EPF account — the remaining 8.33% is diverted to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS).

Can I withdraw my EPF balance before retirement?

Partial withdrawals are allowed for specific purposes such as home purchase, medical emergencies, education, or marriage, subject to EPFO rules on minimum service period. Full withdrawal is generally permitted after two months of unemployment.

Is EPF interest taxable?

EPF interest is tax-free as long as the employee's own contribution does not exceed ₹2.5 lakh per year. Interest earned on contributions above this threshold is taxable in the hands of the employee.

How does the number of years affect my EPF maturity amount?

Since EPF interest compounds annually on an ever-growing balance, staying invested for more years has a disproportionately large effect on the final corpus — the last few years of a long career often add more to the balance than the first several years combined.
