How Fertilizer Requirements Are Calculated
This calculator works out how much Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK) your crop needs, then converts that into real bag quantities of Urea, DAP and MOP - useful for farmers budgeting fertilizer spend and for anyone learning how NPK recommendations are translated into shop-bought fertilizers.
Base NPK Requirement
Every crop has a standard N:P:K requirement per acre (e.g. wheat needs 50:25:25 kg/acre, potato needs 80:40:60 kg/acre). Legumes like chickpea and soybean need far less nitrogen since they fix their own from the air.
Soil & Organic Matter Adjustment
The base requirement is multiplied by a soil factor (sandy 1.2×, loamy 1.0×, clayey 0.9×, black soil 0.85×), then reduced by 20-25% if organic matter or compost is already available in the field.
Converting NPK to Fertilizer Bags
DAP (kg) = Phosphorus needed ÷ 0.46 | Urea (kg) = (Nitrogen needed − N from DAP) ÷ 0.46 | MOP (kg) = Potassium needed ÷ 0.60
DAP supplies both phosphorus (46%) and some nitrogen (18%), so the remaining nitrogen requirement is topped up with Urea (46% N), and MOP supplies all the potassium (60% K).

Why is nitrogen requirement so much lower for chickpea and soybean?
Chickpea and soybean are legumes that fix atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules with rhizobium bacteria, so they need only 8-10 kg N/acre compared to 50-60 kg N/acre for cereals like wheat and maize.
Does organic matter reduce how much chemical fertilizer I need?
Yes. If organic matter or compost is available, nitrogen requirement drops by about 25% and phosphorus and potassium requirements drop by about 20%, since organic matter releases nutrients slowly and improves their availability.
Why is fertilizer applied in split doses instead of all at once?
Phosphorus and half the potassium are applied as a basal dose at sowing, while nitrogen is split across top dressings at around 21 and 40 days after sowing, because nitrogen is easily lost to leaching and splitting it improves uptake efficiency.
How is the fertilizer cost estimate calculated?
The cost estimate multiplies the required Urea, DAP and MOP quantities by approximate current market prices (around ₹6/kg for Urea, ₹27/kg for DAP and ₹17/kg for MOP), though actual prices vary by location and season.
