How GPA Calculation Works

This calculator computes your GPA for a single semester from the subjects you enter. It is not the same as the Cumulative GPA Calculator on this site, which combines several semesters' GPAs into one overall figure, or the CGPA to Percentage Calculator, which converts an existing CGPA into a percentage.

Formula

GPA = (Σ Credits × Grade Point) ÷ (Σ Credits)

Each letter grade (O, A+, A, B+ ...) is converted to a numeric grade point using the selected scale (10-point, 7-point or 4-point).
Each subject's credit points = credits × grade point.
Total credit points are divided by total credits to get your semester GPA.
A performance label (Outstanding, Excellent, Good, etc.) is assigned based on where your GPA falls on the chosen scale.

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) measures your performance in a single semester, while CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the average of your GPAs across all completed semesters. Use this calculator for one semester at a time, and the Cumulative GPA Calculator to combine multiple semesters.

How is GPA calculated from grades and credits?

GPA is calculated as the total credit points (credits × grade point for each subject) divided by the total credits for the semester. Subjects with more credits have a bigger impact on your final GPA.

Which grading scale should I choose?

Pick the scale your institution uses. Most Indian universities use the 10-point scale (O, A+, A, B+, B, C, P, F), some use a 7-point scale, and US-style institutions typically use a 4-point scale.

Do all subjects count equally toward GPA?

No. Subjects are weighted by their credit hours, so a 4-credit subject affects your GPA more than a 1-credit subject with the same grade.

Can I use this calculator for my overall CGPA?

This tool is designed for a single semester's subjects. If you want your overall CGPA across multiple semesters, use the Cumulative GPA Calculator instead, entering each semester's GPA and credits.
