How Cumulative GPA Works
Cumulative GPA is calculated by dividing total grade points by total credits across all semesters. Higher credit semesters have more impact on your overall GPA.

How Cumulative GPA (CGPA) Is Calculated
This calculator combines the GPA and credits of multiple semesters into one overall cumulative GPA. It is different from the plain GPA Calculator, which only works out a single semester's GPA from subject grades, and from the CGPA to Percentage Calculator, which converts an already-known CGPA into a percentage.
Formula
Cumulative GPA = (Σ semester GPA × semester credits) ÷ (Σ semester credits)
- Each semester's grade points = that semester's GPA × its total credits.
- All semesters' grade points are summed and divided by the sum of all credits to get the cumulative GPA.
- Academic standing (First Class, Second Class, etc.) is derived from the cumulative GPA as a percentage of the maximum scale.
- Eligibility for placements (6.0+), higher studies (7.0+) and scholarships (8.0+) is checked against common Indian benchmarks.
- A trend (improving, declining, stable) is calculated by comparing your latest semester GPA to the one before it.
Cumulative GPA Calculator - Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between GPA and cumulative GPA (CGPA)?
GPA reflects performance in a single semester. Cumulative GPA (often called CGPA) is the credit-weighted average of your GPA across all semesters completed so far, giving a fuller picture of your overall academic record.
How is cumulative GPA calculated across semesters?
Each semester's GPA is multiplied by its credit load to get grade points for that semester. All semesters' grade points are added up and divided by the total credits across all semesters.
What CGPA do I need for placements or higher studies?
As a general Indian benchmark, most companies require 6.0+ CGPA for placements, good universities prefer 7.0+ for higher studies, and merit scholarships typically need 8.0+, though exact cutoffs vary by institution.
How does the trend analysis work?
The calculator compares your most recent semester's GPA to the one before it. A rise of more than 0.3 points is marked 'improving', a drop of more than 0.3 is marked 'declining', and smaller changes are marked 'stable'.
Is this the same as the GPA Calculator?
No. Use the GPA Calculator to work out a single semester's GPA from subject grades and credits, then bring those semester GPA and credit values here to calculate your cumulative GPA across all semesters.
