How Exam Marks Are Calculated
This calculator combines your internal (continuous assessment) and external (final exam) marks into a total, percentage and grade, and checks whether you clear the overall as well as any separate internal/external passing thresholds. It is different from the Percentage to Grade Calculator, which only converts an already-known overall percentage into a grade without handling internal/external splits.
Calculation Method
- Total Marks = Internal Marks Obtained + External Marks Obtained
- Percentage = (Total Marks ÷ Total Max Marks) × 100
- Grade and grade point are assigned from the percentage using the standard 10-point scale (O ≥ 90%, A+ ≥ 80%, A ≥ 70%, B+ ≥ 60%, B ≥ 55%, C ≥ 50%, P ≥ 40%, else F).
- You pass only if the overall percentage clears the overall passing criteria, and (if set) the internal and external percentages individually clear their own minimum thresholds.
- If only internal or only external marks are entered, the calculator predicts the likely total and grade based on your available score.

How is the final exam percentage calculated?
Percentage is calculated as (Internal Marks + External Marks) divided by (Internal Max Marks + External Max Marks), multiplied by 100.
Why do I need to pass internal and external marks separately?
Many universities and boards require a minimum percentage in internal assessment and external (final) exams individually, in addition to an overall passing percentage. This calculator checks all three conditions and only marks you as passed if every applicable threshold is met.
What do the letter grades O, A+, A, B+ mean?
These map to percentage ranges on the common 10-point university scale: O (90-100%) is Outstanding, A+ (80-89%) Excellent, A (70-79%) Very Good, B+ (60-69%) Good, B (55-59%) Above Average, C (50-54%) Average, and P (40-49%) is a plain Pass.
Can I calculate my result if I only have internal marks so far?
Yes. If you enter only your internal marks and leave external marks blank, the calculator predicts your likely total and grade assuming a slightly harder external paper, so you can gauge your standing before the final exam.
How many more marks do I need to pass or improve my grade?
The calculator shows exactly how many additional marks are needed to reach the overall passing percentage, and separately, how many more marks would push you into the next higher grade band.
