How the Epoch / Unix Timestamp Converter Works

Developers, DevOps engineers and data analysts use this tool to translate between Unix time (a single number) and human-readable dates, since logs, APIs and databases frequently store dates as raw timestamps.

What Is a Unix Timestamp?

A Unix (epoch) timestamp counts the number of seconds that have elapsed since January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC — the "Unix epoch". This calculator auto-detects whether a timestamp you enter is in seconds or milliseconds based on its size, converts it into a JavaScript Date object, and then formats that date as ISO 8601, UTC string, your local time, and a human-friendly relative time like "3 hours ago".

Date-to-Timestamp & Timezone Conversion

In "Date to Timestamp" mode, your chosen date and time is converted into milliseconds since the epoch (via the browser's date engine) and then divided by 1,000 to get seconds. For timezone comparisons, the same underlying instant in time is formatted using each selected IANA timezone (e.g. Asia/Kolkata, America/New_York) so you see the equivalent local time in every zone at once.

Epoch / Unix Timestamp Converter FAQs

What exactly is the Unix epoch?

The Unix epoch is January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC. A Unix timestamp is simply the number of seconds (or milliseconds) that have passed since that moment, making it a compact, timezone-independent way to represent any point in time.

How does the converter know if my timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?

Timestamps in seconds for dates before roughly the year 2286 are smaller than 10,000,000,000, while the same instant in milliseconds is a much larger number. The calculator uses this size threshold to automatically detect and correctly interpret your input, though you can also set the time unit manually.

Why does the same timestamp show a different time in each timezone?

A Unix timestamp represents one single, absolute instant in time. Each timezone's formatter applies that timezone's UTC offset (and daylight saving rules) to display the correct local wall-clock time for that instant, which is why the displayed hour differs across zones.

What does the 'relative time' value mean?

It expresses how far the converted date is from the current moment in plain language, such as '2 hours ago' or 'in 5 days', calculated from the difference between the timestamp and your current system time.

Can I convert a specific date and time into a Unix timestamp?

Yes, switch to 'Date to Timestamp' mode, pick any date and time, and the calculator converts it into both the epoch seconds and epoch milliseconds values.
