How the Age Calculator Works

This tool is built for anyone who needs an exact age breakdown rather than a rough estimate — parents tracking a child's milestones, HR teams verifying eligibility, or anyone curious how many days they've actually been alive. Enter a birth date (and optionally a "calculate on" date) to get your age down to the second, or compare two birth dates to see exactly who is older and by how much.

Calculation Method

Years, months and days are found by subtracting the birth date from the target date calendar-field by calendar-field, borrowing a month (using the number of days in the previous month) whenever the day count goes negative, and borrowing a year whenever the month count goes negative. Total days is the whole-day difference between the two dates in milliseconds divided by 86,400,000, and totals for weeks, hours, minutes and seconds are derived directly from that day count. Your zodiac sign is looked up from the standard date ranges for each sign, and your next birthday is the soonest upcoming occurrence of your birth month/day.

Why the Numbers Sometimes Look Different

Because months have different lengths, "years, months, and days" age can look slightly different from a raw day-count divided by 365.25 — the calendar-based method used here matches how age is stated on official documents and ID checks.

How is my age calculated down to years, months and days?

We compare your birth date to today's date (or a custom date you choose) field by field. If the day-of-month is smaller in the target month, we borrow a month using the actual number of days in the previous month; if the month count goes negative after that, we borrow a year. This calendar-accurate method matches how age is stated on passports and official forms, rather than a simple 365-day-per-year estimate.

Why does the total days count differ from years times 365?

Total days is calculated as the exact millisecond difference between the two dates divided by 86,400,000 (the number of milliseconds in a day). Because leap years add an extra day roughly every four years, this exact figure is usually a bit higher than years × 365.

How is my zodiac sign determined?

Your zodiac sign is matched against the standard Western astrology date ranges for your birth month and day, for example Capricorn for December 22 to January 19.

Can I calculate age on a date other than today?
