How Crop Spacing Is Calculated
This calculator helps farmers and agronomy students plan the right row-to-row and plant-to-plant spacing for 10 major Indian crops - wheat, rice, maize, cotton, sugarcane, potato, tomato, onion, soybean and chickpea. Correct spacing directly affects sunlight capture, nutrient competition, disease spread and total yield, so it matters whether you are sowing a backyard plot or a multi-acre field.
Base Spacing by Crop
Every crop starts from a standard row × plant spacing in centimetres (e.g. wheat 20×5 cm, maize 60×20 cm, cotton 90×45 cm, tomato 75×45 cm). This calculator looks up that standard first.
Variety Adjustment
The base spacing is then multiplied by a variety factor: dwarf varieties ×0.85 (closer spacing), semi-dwarf ×1.0 (standard), and tall varieties ×1.15 (wider spacing to avoid overcrowding and lodging).
Planting Method Rounding
For machine sowing, row spacing is rounded up to the nearest 5 cm so it matches standard seed drill settings. Manual and transplanting methods use the exact calculated spacing.
Plant Population Formula
Plants per acre = (4,047 m² × 10,000 cm²/m²) ÷ (Row spacing cm × Plant spacing cm)
The same formula, scaled to 10,000 m², gives plants per hectare. Total plants needed is plants-per-acre multiplied by your land area in acres.

What row and plant spacing should I use for wheat?
Standard wheat spacing is about 20 cm between rows and 5 cm between plants for semi-dwarf varieties, adjusted slightly for dwarf or tall varieties and for manual versus machine sowing.
Why does variety type (dwarf, semi-dwarf, tall) change spacing?
Dwarf varieties have a smaller canopy and can be planted closer together (about 15% tighter), while tall varieties need roughly 15% more space to avoid overcrowding, lodging and disease spread from poor air circulation.
How is plant population per acre calculated?
Plant population is derived by dividing the total area available (4,047 m² per acre, converted to cm²) by the area occupied by a single plant, which equals row spacing multiplied by plant spacing.
Does the sowing method affect the amount of seed or spacing needed?
Yes. Machine sowing rounds row spacing to the nearest 5 cm to match standard seed drill calibration, while manual sowing and transplanting can follow the exact recommended spacing more precisely.
