How the Study Hours Calculation Works
This calculator estimates how many study hours you need to close the gap between your current marks and your target marks before the exam, then spreads that time into a weekly schedule. It is different from the Exam Marks Calculator, which analyzes marks you have already scored rather than planning future study time.
Calculation Method
- Marks Gap = Target Marks − Current Marks
- Total Hours Required = Marks Gap × Base Hours per Mark (1.5 for easy, 2.5 for moderate, 4.0 for difficult subjects) × Preparation Level Multiplier (1.5 for beginner, 1.0 for intermediate, 0.7 for advanced).
- Daily Hours Required = Total Hours Required ÷ Days Until Exam.
- If your daily hours required exceeds your available daily commitment, the plan is flagged as not feasible so you can adjust your target or timeline.
- Time is then split into a study plan (percentage for new topics, practice and revision) that shifts more toward revision and practice as your preparation level rises, and a day-by-day weekly schedule.
Study Hours Calculator - Frequently Asked Questions
How many study hours do I need per day before an exam?
It depends on your marks gap, subject difficulty and preparation level. The calculator works out total hours needed, then divides by the days remaining to give you a realistic daily hours figure.
What happens if I don't have enough daily time to reach my target?
The calculator flags your plan as 'not feasible' and shows exactly how many hours you're short, so you can either increase your daily commitment, extend your timeline, or set a more realistic target.
How does subject difficulty affect the study hours estimate?
Easy subjects use 1.5 hours per mark of improvement, moderate subjects use 2.5 hours, and difficult subjects use 4.0 hours - reflecting that harder subjects generally take longer to improve in.
Why does my preparation level change the hours needed?
A beginner needs more time per mark of improvement (1.5x multiplier) since they are starting from limited knowledge, while an advanced learner needs less (0.7x) since they already have a strong foundation.
How is the weekly schedule structured?
Time is distributed across the week with more hours dedicated to new topics and practice on weekdays, a longer session for weak areas on Saturday, and a lighter revision-focused day on Sunday.
