What Is Professional Tax and Who Pays It?
Professional Tax (PT) is a small state-level tax levied on salaried employees and self-employed professionals, deducted monthly by the employer from salary. Because it is a state subject, the slabs, thresholds and even applicability vary widely from one state to another — this calculator uses the actual slab structure for Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
Sample State Slabs (Monthly Salary)
Maharashtra: Nil up to ₹7,500, ₹175 for ₹7,501–₹10,000, ₹200 above ₹10,000. Karnataka: Nil up to ₹15,000, ₹200 above. Tamil Nadu: Nil up to ₹3,500, rising in steps to ₹208.33 above ₹10,000. West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh each have their own multi-slab structures.
Professional Tax slabs are revised by individual state governments from time to time, and some states (like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar) do not levy PT at all. Always confirm the current slab applicable in your state with your employer's payroll team or the state commercial taxes department before relying on this estimate.
Professional Tax Calculator FAQs
What is the maximum Professional Tax I can be charged in a year?
In almost all states that levy Professional Tax, the total amount payable in a financial year is capped at ₹2,500, no matter how high your monthly salary is.
Is Professional Tax the same in every state?
No. Professional Tax is levied and regulated by individual state governments, so the slabs, monthly amounts and even whether PT applies at all vary significantly — for example, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar do not levy Professional Tax.
Who deducts and pays Professional Tax?
For salaried employees, the employer deducts Professional Tax from the monthly salary and deposits it with the state government. Self-employed professionals and business owners must register and pay it directly themselves.
Can I claim a deduction for Professional Tax paid?
Yes. Professional Tax paid during the year is fully deductible from your gross salary income under the Income Tax Act, reducing your taxable salary before further tax computation.
Why is Maharashtra's Professional Tax higher in February for some slabs?
Maharashtra charges ₹300 instead of the usual ₹200 in the month of February for employees in the higher salary slabs, so that the total annual collection reaches the ₹2,500 cap exactly across 12 months.
