How CGPA to Percentage Conversion Works
This calculator converts your CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average, usually on a 10-point scale) into an equivalent percentage using the exact formula your university follows. It is different from the Marks to CGPA Calculator, which goes the other way and converts raw exam marks into CGPA, and from the Percentage to Grade Calculator, which maps a percentage to a letter grade rather than to CGPA.
Calculation Steps
- Your CGPA is normalized to a 10-point scale if entered on a different scale (e.g., 4 or 7-point).
- The university-specific formula is applied - for example, VTU uses CGPA × 10, Anna University uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, and the Standard formula uses CGPA × 9.5.
- The result is capped at 100%, since percentage marks cannot exceed 100%.
- A grade classification (First Class, Second Class, etc.) and equivalent letter grade are derived from the final percentage.
CGPA to Percentage - Frequently Asked Questions
How is CGPA converted to percentage in Indian universities?
Most universities multiply your CGPA by a fixed factor (such as ×9.5 or ×10), while some use a custom formula, like Anna University's (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. This calculator applies the exact formula for 15+ Indian universities automatically so you don't have to look it up.
What formula should I use if my university isn't listed?
Select 'Standard Conversion' which uses Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. This is the formula most widely accepted by UGC and recruiters when an institution-specific formula isn't published.
Why do different universities use different multipliers?
Each university sets its own conversion policy based on its internal grading distribution. VTU, GTU, RGPV, Pune, KTU, BPUT and WBUT use CGPA × 10, while AKTU, JNTU, Delhi and MDU use CGPA × 9.5, and Anna University and Mumbai University subtract a constant before multiplying by 10.
Can my converted percentage exceed 100%?
No. Even if the raw formula produces a higher value for a very high CGPA, the calculator caps the result at 100%, since actual percentage marks cannot go beyond that.
Is this the same as the Marks to CGPA calculator?
No. This tool converts CGPA into percentage. If you instead have raw exam marks and want to find your equivalent CGPA, use the separate Marks to CGPA calculator on this site.
