How Stock Average is Calculated

When you buy shares of the same stock at different times and prices, your true cost basis isn't a simple average of the prices — it's a quantity-weighted average. This calculator lets you add each purchase (quantity and price) and instantly see your combined average buy price and total investment, which is useful when averaging down or building a position over time.

Formula Used:

Average Price = Total Amount Invested ÷ Total Number of Shares

Total Amount Invested = Σ (Quantity of each purchase × Price of each purchase)

Example:

Buying 100 shares at ₹250 and 200 shares at ₹275 gives: Total Invested = (100 × 250) + (200 × 275) = ₹80,000; Total Shares = 300; Average Price = 80,000 ÷ 300 = ₹266.67 per share.

Stock Average Calculator FAQs

What is stock averaging and why do investors do it?

Stock averaging (also called 'averaging down' or 'averaging up') means buying more shares of the same stock at different price levels to change your overall average purchase price. Investors often average down when a stock they believe in falls, aiming to lower their breakeven price so a smaller price recovery is needed to turn a profit.

How is average buy price calculated when I buy at different prices?

Average buy price is a quantity-weighted average, not a simple average of the prices. It is calculated as the total amount invested across all purchases divided by the total number of shares bought — so a purchase with more shares has a bigger influence on the final average than a purchase with fewer shares.

Is averaging down always a good strategy?

No. Averaging down only makes sense if the company's fundamentals are still sound and the price drop is temporary. Blindly averaging down on a fundamentally weak or declining business can increase your losses instead of reducing them. Always review why the price fell before adding more capital.

Does this calculator account for brokerage and other charges?

No, this calculator computes the average price purely from the quantity and price you enter for each purchase. It does not include brokerage, STT, GST or other transaction charges. Use our Brokerage Calculator alongside this tool to get your true all-in average cost.
