How Seed Rate Is Calculated
This calculator works out how many kilograms (and standard bags) of seed you need to sow 15 crops - cereals, pulses, cash crops and vegetables - across your land, and estimates the resulting plant population and seed cost, so you buy the right quantity without over- or under-ordering.
Base Seed Rate
Each crop has a standard seed rate per acre (e.g. wheat 40 kg/acre, maize 8 kg/acre, cotton 4 kg/acre, sugarcane 2,500 kg/acre of setts, potato 1,500 kg/acre of tubers).
Sowing Method & Germination Adjustment
Adjusted rate = Base rate ร Sowing method factor รท Germination rate
Broadcasting needs 25% more seed (1.25ร) due to uneven distribution, line sowing uses the standard rate (1.0ร), and transplanting needs 20% less (0.8ร) since it starts from a nursery. The result is then divided by germination rate - 85% for certified seed, 70% for normal seed - so more seed is bought to compensate for seeds that won't germinate.
Bags & Plant Population
Total seed weight is divided by the crop's standard bag size (e.g. 50 kg for wheat, 25 kg for rice, 5 kg for cotton) and rounded up to whole bags. Expected plant population is estimated from seed weight, germination rate and seeds-per-kg for the crop.

How much seed do I need per acre for wheat?
Wheat typically needs about 40 kg of seed per acre at the standard line-sowing rate with certified seed (85% germination); this rises for broadcasting (25% more) or drops for transplanting, and increases further if using normal seed with a lower germination rate.
Why do certified seeds require a lower seed rate than normal seeds?
Certified seeds have a higher, guaranteed germination rate (around 85%) compared to normal or farm-saved seed (around 70%), so fewer certified seeds are needed to achieve the same final plant population per acre.
How does sowing method change the amount of seed required?
Broadcasting scatters seed unevenly and needs about 25% more seed than line sowing to compensate for gaps and clumping, while transplanting (raising seedlings in a nursery first) needs about 20% less seed since almost every seedling that survives gets planted.
How many bags of seed will I need to buy?
The calculator divides your total seed requirement in kilograms by the standard bag size for that crop (for example 50 kg bags for wheat, 25 kg bags for rice, 5 kg bags for cotton) and rounds up, since you cannot buy a fraction of a bag.
Is seed treatment necessary before sowing?
Yes - treating seed with a fungicide (like Thiram or Carbendazim) and biofertilizers (like Rhizobium or Azotobacter) before sowing protects against soil-borne diseases and improves early germination and nutrient uptake, and treated seed should be sown within 24 hours.
