What Is an EMI Calculator?

An EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) calculator helps borrowers estimate the fixed monthly amount payable towards any loan — home, car, personal, or education — before they apply. It is useful for comparing loan offers from different banks, planning your monthly budget, and understanding how much of each payment goes towards interest versus principal.

EMI Formula

EMI = [P × R × (1 + R)N] / [(1 + R)N − 1]

P = Principal loan amount, R = Monthly interest rate (Annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), N = Number of monthly installments (Tenure in years × 12)

Each EMI payment is split into an interest component and a principal component. In the early months, interest forms the larger share of the EMI because the outstanding balance is still high; as the loan matures, the principal share increases and the interest share shrinks — this is exactly what the amortization schedule above shows.

EMI Calculator FAQs

What is EMI and how is it calculated?

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Installment, the fixed amount you pay every month towards a loan. It is calculated using the formula EMI = [P × R × (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N − 1], where P is the principal, R is the monthly interest rate, and N is the number of monthly installments.

Does the EMI amount stay the same throughout the loan tenure?

Yes, for a standard fixed-rate loan the EMI amount remains constant every month, but the proportion of interest and principal within each EMI changes — interest is higher in the beginning and principal repayment increases over time.

How does the loan tenure affect my EMI and total interest?

A longer tenure lowers your monthly EMI but increases the total interest you pay over the life of the loan. A shorter tenure raises the EMI but reduces the overall interest cost, since the principal is repaid faster.

Can I use this EMI calculator for any type of loan?

Yes, this calculator works for any reducing-balance loan — home loans, car loans, personal loans, or education loans — as long as you enter the correct principal, annual interest rate, and tenure in years.

What is an amortization schedule?

An amortization schedule is a month-by-month breakdown of your loan repayment showing the EMI, the portion going towards interest, the portion going towards principal, and the remaining outstanding balance after each payment.
