How Crop Yield & Profitability Are Estimated

This calculator estimates production, revenue, cost and profit for 10 major Indian crops - useful for farmers planning the season, students studying farm economics, or anyone evaluating whether a crop is worth growing on a given plot of land.

Yield Formula

Yield per acre = Base yield × Soil factor × Irrigation factor × Fertilizer factor × Variety factor × Season factor

Base yields (quintals/acre) come from average Indian production data - e.g. wheat 18, rice 20, maize 22, sugarcane 350. Soil factor ranges from 0.75× (sandy) to 1.1× (black soil); irrigation is 1.3× when available versus 0.7× rainfed; fertilizer use adds 1.2× versus 0.8×; variety ranges from 0.8× (local) to 1.3× (hybrid); and season factor reflects how well a crop suits Kharif, Rabi or Zaid conditions.

Revenue & Cost

Market value = Expected yield × current price per quintal. Production cost is the sum of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation, labor, machinery and miscellaneous costs, each scaled to your land area and adjusted for whether irrigation and fertilizers are actually used.

Net Profit

Net Profit = Market Value − Production Cost, and Profit Margin = (Net Profit ÷ Market Value) × 100

How accurate is this crop yield estimate?

The estimate uses average Indian yield data and standard multipliers for soil, irrigation, fertilizer, variety and season, so it is a reliable planning guide - but actual yield still depends on weather, pest pressure, exact soil health and farming practices on your specific field.

Which factor has the biggest impact on crop yield?

Irrigation availability typically has the largest swing (1.3× with irrigation versus 0.7× without), followed by seed variety (hybrid seeds can yield up to 1.3× more than local varieties) and fertilizer use.

How is production cost broken down?

Production cost is split into seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation, labor, machinery and miscellaneous expenses, each based on typical per-acre rates for the selected crop and scaled to your total land area.

Why does the same crop show different yields in different seasons?

Each crop has a season suitability factor - for example rice yields best in Kharif (monsoon) while wheat performs best in Rabi (winter) - so sowing a crop outside its ideal season reduces the estimated yield.

What should I do if the calculator shows a net loss?
