How Ovulation Calculation Works
Ovulation Timing
Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the next period (luteal phase is consistently ~14 days). For a 28-day cycle, ovulation is predicted on day 14.
Fertile Window
Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the female reproductive tract. The fertile window includes the 5 days before ovulation plus the ovulation day itself (6 days total).
Best Conception Days
The highest pregnancy rates occur from intercourse on the 2 days before ovulation through ovulation day. These are your most fertile days.
Cycle Phases
Menstrual cycle has 4 phases: Menstruation (5 days), Follicular (day 1 to ovulation), Ovulation (~2 days), and Luteal (ovulation to next period, ~14 days).

Ovulation Calculator FAQs
How does this calculator predict ovulation?
Ovulation is estimated to occur 14 days before your next expected period, since the luteal phase (time between ovulation and the next period) is fairly consistent at about 14 days across most menstrual cycles. This calculator subtracts 14 from your cycle length to find your ovulation day.
What is the fertile window and why is it 6 days?
Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, so the fertile window includes the 5 days leading up to ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself, giving a 6-day window when conception is possible.
What if my cycle length is irregular?
This calculator assumes a consistent cycle length. If your cycles vary significantly month to month, predictions will be less reliable. Tracking several cycles, using ovulation predictor kits, or monitoring basal body temperature can improve accuracy for irregular cycles.
Which days give the best chance of conception?
The two days before ovulation through the day of ovulation itself generally have the highest pregnancy rates, since the egg is released around ovulation and sperm need time to reach it.
Is this calculator a reliable form of contraception or medical advice?
No. This tool provides estimates for general awareness and family planning purposes only, based on average cycle patterns. It is not a substitute for medical advice, fertility testing, or reliable contraception. Consult a doctor for fertility concerns or before relying on cycle tracking for contraception.
